My guess is that the "Weld" RPM of your machine is a bit high, and you will find the frequency to be above 60 Hz. along with the higher voltage. You will need someone besides me to explain how to adjust the RPM down; I'm not familiar with your welder. No I'm running the grinders at weld speed.

Big 40 Problem. 07-30-2013, 03:14 PM. Ive got an older Big 40, gas engine. The engine runs great, but after sitting without being used for quite some time, it doesnt weld. If I turn the Fine Current Adjustment up to , it will weld, but not anywhere else on the dial. I would appreciate any advice.
Big 40 Amps. If your course setting is 100-175 amps. Your fine setting is in percent of that range. As long as your fine side goes from 0 to 100 as my 1988 model year. That means at 0 % you would be at 100 amps. At 100 % on fine you would be at 175 amps. So at 55% on fine side of 100-175 amps. That would be welding around 140-amps.

A Big 40 is usually a Continental 4 cylinder engine driven welder. All Miller welders produce AC weld output and use a rectifier for DC weld output. The rectifier on one of those is maybe an arrangement of stud diodes mounted on the endplate or more likely a set of diodes mounted in a grid of flat plates as a complete unit.
